On the 1841 census (taken on June 6th), the family name is listed as "Arrowell". Daniel, an agricultural labourer, is listed with his wife Mary Ann and son Jonathan on one page, then five other children on the subsequent page. The residential address is Crouchfield (no street suffix), Hemel Hempstead (Crouchfield does not have a street suffix on a map today either). Hemel Hempstead is about 23 miles from the Kensington area where some of the next generation would take up residence. The ages shown on the census are: Daniel, 45; Mary Ann, 35; Jonathan, an agricultural labourer, 15; James, an agricultural worker, 15; Mary, 8; John, 6; Thomas, 3; and Louisa, 3 months. The ages of Jonathan and James reported as being the same (15) leaving room for speculation - twins perhaps, or something else. Elizabeth Ball (surname an estimation, with the last two letters similar to the written "ll" in Harowell, do not include the checkmark) is another person listed in the household, age 60; occupation: straw plaiter (maker of straw hats, etc.).

on the 1851 census, taken on March 30th, Daniel is ported to be age 58; MaryAnn: age 48; James: age 26; Mary: age 18; Thomas: age 12; Louisa: age 10; Caroline: age 4.

1861 census for Daniel and family.

On the 1861 census (taken on April 7th), head of family Daniel is a 70-year-old labourer, wife Mary Ann is 60 years old, 37-year-old son James is also a labourer, 25-year-old son John is a journeyman baker, 14-year-old daughter Caroline a straw plaiter. There are always coincidences when dealing with census information, but often the obvious proves to be relevant and true. The Elizabeth Ball who was part of the Harrowell household on the 1841 census was a straw plaiter, perhaps the teacher of Caroline. On the 1861 census, the next line on the census is for 52-year-old John Ball. His entry describes him as a labourer, and his "relation to head of family" was first "lodger", crossed out and overwritten "head". He is of the age that he could be Elizabeth Ball's son, showing a long-term association between the two families, in this case she may have passed on but John was known to the Harrowells and took up residence in her place. The change from "lodger" to "head" seems to imply that there was an apartment or separate living quarters that the Balls were living in. All of this group were born in Hemel Hempstead Hertfordshire. Ecclesiastical District is Boxmoor.

On the 1871 census (taken on April 2nd), for village of Boxmoor, Hemel Hempstead, Hertfordshire, ecclesiastical district of St. John, retired head of the family Daniel is reported as age 80, wife Mary (Ann) is reported as age 70, and son James is reported as age 48, labourer. The address is shown as a carry-down from the top of the page where it appears to read "Duck Hall". Mentions of Duck Hall in the area seem to refer to Duck Hall Farm on the southern part of Boxmoor, towards Bovingdon. It is unclear if the address is describing a road to Duck Hall Farm, perhaps a postal route. Unless there was an omission on the form, it does show that the family has moved from Crouchfield (see above) at some point since 1841.

John Harrowell (Sr.)

On the 1851 census for Hemel Hempstead, John does not appear with his family, rather he appears as a 16-year-old servant of the family of Benjamin Plummer "Plum" Pratten, Baptist minister, tutor and author/translator of Latin, and his wife Mary.

On the 1861 census for Hemel Hempstead (see above), John is reported as being 25-years-old, a journeyman baker, and under the roof of his father and mother.

married on May 24, 1863, in Hemel Hempstead, Hertfordshire, England, to Mary Ann Smith (born July 10, 1838, in Walsall, Staffordshire), daughter of John Smith (born 1811) and Henrietta Perry (born 1811).

This period photo (looks like late 1800's) is believed to be John Harrowell (Sr.). I credit the photo to Lee Hermitage, whom I am trying to track down. Lee, please contact me at camlonghurst ought canada's yahoo.

An employment record for John's time working for Great Western Railway as a "uniformed staff" member confirms his birthdate and shows him as being hired in July of 1864. He is recorded as being a carpenter at "Paddn Goods", which likely means the Paddington station goods depot (taken to mean a freight-handling job, perhaps making crates or installing dunnage for shipments). His wages were not great, beginning at 21/., with a raise to 23/. on June 6, 1874 after 10 year's employment, and another to 24/. in November of 1889 after 25 years employment (presumed shillings per week). An entry under the Cautions and Fines section shows an incident that occurred on October 7, 1888. John was fined 2s.6d. (about half a day's pay) for what looks like "illtreating a horse". Testimonials about the incident are noted with reference number 6092.

1881 census for John Harrowell and family.

on the 1881 census, John is reported as being 45 years old, married, employed by (Great Western) Railway, born in "Herts Boxmoor" (Boxmoor Village, Hertsfordshire, part of Hemel Hempstead today), with seven children. Mary Ann is reported as being 42 years old, born in Stafford Wallsall. No family members were reported as being "deaf-and-dumb, blind, imbecile or idiot, or lunatic".

on the 1891 census, John is reported as being 55 years old, carpenter, born in Herts Hemel Hemstead. Mary Ann is reported as being 52 years old, born in Staffordshire Wallsall.

The 1881 census puts the family living in a portion of 3 Silchester Terrace in the civil parish of Kensington, municipal ward of St. John and St. James, the parliamentary borough of Chelsea and the parish of St. Clement. (Note: "The 1881 British Isles Census was taken on the night of 3 April 1881." This may be helpful regarding ages and birthdates.)

The 1891 census puts the family living in just two rooms (see relevant column) at 2 Bransford Street, civil parish of Kensington, municipal ward of St. John and St. James, the parliamentary borough of North Kensington, and in the parish of St. Michael and All Angels. (Note: "The 1891 Census for England was taken on the night of 5 April 1891.")

Map on right: Bransford Street in North Kensington was just a five minute walk (along Treverton and Ladbroke Grove) from St. Michael and All Angels Church. At one point, Bransford had been renamed Porlock Street. Porlock and Branstone disappeared in the 1960's when the area was redeveloped. Barlby Primary School occupies most of this location today (2016)
